Snow and ice are two of the least favorite words for drivers. Bad roads are never fun to drive and when winter hits they are basically happening daily. It happens every year and we know when it’s coming, but it always seems like people forget how to handle it.
A refresher course is always nice though. No matter your car or driving habits these tips and tricks can go a long way towards keeping you and your family safe over the holiday season. There’s lots of different hazards to weave between and things to be aware of.
Winter Roads and Driving Tips
Obviously, the first thing to be aware of is that the snow and ice create slippery conditions that can make braking, turning, and steering in general. You’ll want to make sure you’re always fully rested before hitting the roads, nodding off for even a split second is already dangerous enough without the extra hazards of snow and ice. Making sure your tires are always inflated and your gas tank is always at least half full, to prevent gas line freezes, are some quick and easy things to do to keep your car in running shape.
As far as tips for when you are driving, take things slow. Trying to peel out or get off to a quick start is only going to spin your wheels without really going anywhere. That fact is important to remember when going up hills, make sure you don’t stop when driving uphill because it’ll be hard to regain traction if you start slipping. One of the biggest tips for driving in the winter is just don’t go out and drive if you don’t have to. Regardless of your skill at driving in the snow, not everyone else has that same skill and it’s better not to risk it.
